Today, the House Judiciary Committee announced two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The Loyal Opposition fully supports both articles.
The first article contends that Trump abused his power by “using the powers of his high office” to solicit the “interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, in the 2020 United States Presidential election.” He did so by corruptly “conditioning official United States Government acts of significant value to Ukraine on its public announcement” of an investigation into a political rival, Joe Biden, for his personal benefit. Highly credible witnesses such as Ambassador William Taylor laid out in great detail Trump’s threat to cancel $391 million in military aid appropriated by Congress if Ukraine failed to make that announcement. The second article contends that Trump abused his power by obstructing Congress’ impeachment inquiry by directing an “unprecedented, categorical, and indiscriminate defense of subpoenas issued by the House of Representatives.” Without legal justification, Trump ordered executive agencies and officers to willfully ignore subpoenas to testify and to produce documents. He must not be able to escape accountability for committing high crimes through a scheme of willful obstruction.
Ultimately, both articles support the conclusion that Trump “has abused the power of the Presidency in a manner offensive to, and subversive of, the Constitution.” Through his misconduct, Trump has clearly shown that “he will remain a threat to the Constitution if allowed to remain in office.” He is a danger to national security and to the integrity of the 2020 Presidential elections. He must be impeached and removed from office.
