Protect the Nov. election from Russia by passing the DETER Act

February 14, 2018

Use Contacting Congress or the House/Senate switchboard (202-225-3121)/(202-224-3121) to connect with your members of Congress.

The Call –  #DETERAct On Tuesday, the Trump-appointed heads of US intelligence agencies testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee that Russia meddled in our 2016 elections, continues its attack on our political system and is determined to interfere with our mid-term elections. Despite the intelligence agencies’ consensus, Trump has declined to impose sanctions on Russia, which Congress passed by overwhelming majorities. Trump has claimed, despite the evidence, that the mere threat of sanctions is a sufficient deterrent. In spite of the president’s inaction, Congress must defend the nation’s elections from foreign interference. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Chris Von Hollen (D-MD) recently introduced the Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Red Lines Act (“DETER”). The DETER Act would automatically impose severe sanctions on Russia if Putin interferes in our elections by using traditional or social media to spread false information to Americans, or tamper in any way with state election systems, including registration databases and campaign emails. A bipartisan House companion bill currently has 7 co-sponsors. Your Action Call your members of Congress and urge them to protect the November election from Russian interference by promptly passing the DETER Act. Talking Points

  • This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [CITY, STATE].

  • Russia attacked us in 2016, is continuing to do so, and President Trump has refused to impose the sanctions passed overwhelmingly by Congress.

  • I want [Rep/Sen____] to support the DETER Act and push for its rapid enactment so that Russia will be hurt financially for further interference.

  • Congress must act to protect our elections by passing automatic sanctions, which cannot be waived by a conflicted president, against the on-going Russian interference.
