September 14, 2017 The Call –#DreamAct #DefendDREAMers #Dreamers Trump’s termination of President Obama’s DACA executive order, with a 6 month delay, has thrown the Dreamers and their families’ lives into turmoil. Although Trump has since waffled, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) say Trump agreed to back legislation protecting the Dreamers that would not include a wall. This was greeted with enormous blowback by Trump’s base. However, some Republicans are showing interest in protecting the Dreamers. Large majorities of American voters, including a majority of Trump voters, favor protecting the Dreamers. Leaving them subject to deportation would have devastating economic impact. A key issue will be what, if any additional “border control” protections Republicans try to impose as part of a deal. The Koch-backed Cato Institute has “scored” the Dream Act, along with various proposed anti-immigrant measures, and concluded that there is a powerful economic case in favor of a clean Dream Act. Ending DACA and leaving the Dreamers subject to deportation is not only a cruel betrayal of young people raised as Americans, but is also terrible for the US economy. Congress must pass the Dream Act, without any conditions. Your Action Call your members of Congress and urge them to support the Dream Act. Talking Points
