Daily Call To Action: November 20th, 2017

November 19, 2017 The Call – #CHIP The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which was enacted in 1997 with bipartisan support and funds health care for children from working families that don’t qualify for Medicaid, was allowed to expire on October 1st. CHIP covers nearly 9 million children, providing coverage for routine pediatric and dental care, as well as coverage for seriously ill children. The program has brought the uninsured child rate down from 15% to 5%. States still have some funding left, but most will run out by the end of the year or shortly thereafter. States are preparing for the worst and planning roll-backs. In Texas, funds are being depleted even faster because of Hurricane Harvey, and 800,000 children are in danger of losing coverage soon. While there is bipartisan agreement that CHIP should be renewed, its fate is uncertain because of small disputes on details and limited time to act. CHIP has povided major benefits for children’s health and the failure of Congress to renew it would be a tremendous blow. Congress must make time to quickly reauthorize funding for CHIP to protect the health of America’s most vulnerable children. Your Action Call your three Members of Congress and tell them to promptly reauthorize funding for CHIP to protect children’s healthcare. Talking Points

  • This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].

  • I am dismayed that funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program was allowed to expire.

  • This puts at risk the health and well-being of 9 million children who will soon lose access to healthcare, and punishes working families.

  • I urge [Sen/Rep____] to support immediate reauthorization of funding for CHIP, so American children continue to get the care they need.
