Daily Call to Action: November 16th, 2017

November 15, 2017 The Call – #TrumpTaxScam # GOPtaxscam House republicans are confident they will have the votes to pass their major tax-cut package on Thursday. Critics have pointed out that many of the promises made in the lead up to the vote are without merit.  While the GOP predicts lower taxes for all and positive effects on the economy, analysts are proposing the opposite. As the Senate GOP moves to craft their own version of tax reform they are adding a provision to their tax bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate. Repealing the mandate would free up more than $300 billion in government funding, but it would cause 13 million fewer people to have health insurance in a decade. The overwhelmingly flawed premise of the GOP’s plan is that tax cuts for businesses would lead companies to invest more and raise workers wages.  This idea has been largely discredited by historical precedents and recently by CEOs of major corporations. In sum, GOP tax reform will add more than one trillion dollars to the deficit, give the majority of benefits to corporations and the rich, and gut the ACA leaving thirteen million people without healthcare. Congress must act to protect the economy and to provide tax reform that will benefit the majority of US citizens. Your Action Call your members of Congress and urge them to oppose the GOP tax plan. Talking Points

  • This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].

  • I urge [Rep____ ] to oppose [H.R.1], and [Sen___] to oppose the Senate tax bill now being proposed.

  • These bills give massive cuts to the wealthy, paid for by raising taxes on tens of millions of middle-class families.

  • This legislation would further cause at least a $3.6 trillion shortfall in federal revenue by 2040 and add nearly $1 trillion to the deficit over 10 years.

  • The Senate bill’s provision to repeal the ACA’s individual mandate will destroy the Affordable Care Act and cause more than 13 million people to lose insurance.

  • This plan promises that tax-cuts for corporations and the wealthy will increase prosperity for the nation but there are no built-in safeguards against the possibility that doesn’t occur.
