May 8, 2017 The Call – #Trumpcare #WomensHealth Trumpcare passed the House last Thursday by a narrow margin and now heads to the Senate. Also known as the AHCA, the bill, which was crafted and passed overwhelmingly by men, would throw millions of Americans off Medicaid and make health insurance unaffordable for many more, especially those with pre-existing conditions. It has a particularly negative effect on women’s healthcare. It guts Planned Parenthood and treats pregnancy, sexual assault, domestic violence, C-sections and postpartum depression as pre-existing conditions. It also gives states the option of letting insurer’s drop coverage for mammograms, cervical cancer screenings, birth control and maternity and newborn care. There would be additional impacts on poor women since Medicaid could no longer be used for birth control access or STD’s. The Senate Republicans have assembled a 13 person team – all men – to consider the AHCA and craft its own version. Female senators have historically been more attuned to women’s health issues and at least one of the five current Republican women senators, Sen Susan Collins (R-ME), has already reacted negatively to the all male team entrusted by Senate leadership to craft the Senate bill. It is outrageous and a huge step backwards to have women’s health issues dealt with solely by men. American women deserve to have a strong voice in their health care. Your Action Call your senators and demand that they support women Senators having a strong official voice in crafting the Senate’s healthcare bill. Script Hi. This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP]. I’m calling because I want [Sen____] to know that I am very concerned that the AHCA passed by the House is terrible for women, and that I think it is ridiculous that the Senate group working is all men. I would like [Sen____] to forcefully support adding women to the official Senate team working on the healthcare bill. [Optional: Describe how the AHCA would affect you or your loved ones as a woman.] I appreciate your time!
