May 1, 2017 The Call – #Conflicts & #Corruption (S.65/H.R.371) Urge your senators to support The Presidential Conflicts of Interest Act of 2017. The legislation is currently under consideration in both the House (H.R.371) and the Senate (S.65) and would require the President to divulge his tax returns and divest financial assets which create a conflict of interest. Unlike all previous presidents, President Trump has declined to divest financial assets which create a conflict of interest. Instead, he created a revocable trust in favor of his sons to run his business, an arrangement deemed inadequate by ethics experts, which has since been further weakened by a provision to permit to Trump to take out funds at will and an agreement to provide regular financial reports to Trump. The Sunlight Foundation keeps a running list of Trump conflicts and potential conflicts. A lawsuit working its way through the courts alleges Trump Organization business with foreign governments at hotels and other properties violates the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. The most recent conflicts in the news include the State Department website touting Mar-A-Lago as the Winter White House and whether there is any connection between Trump Tower in Manila, President Duterte’s invite to the White House, and Duterte appointing Trump’s partner as his special envoy to the United States. America deserves transparency from the President and to know whether he is a crook. Your Action Call your members of Congress to urge them to support The Presidential Conflicts of Interest Act of 2017 (S.65/H.R.371). Script Hi. This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP]. I’m calling because I want [Sen/Rep____] to support (S.65/H.R.371), which would require the President to divest financial assets which create a conflict of interest. I’m very concerned about the appearance of corruption and think this legislation would go a long way to solving the problem. [Optional: I’m particularly concerned about the President vacationing at his own properties at taxpayer expense, his continued involvement in his business and potential conflicts in foreign countries like the Philippines and Venezuela.] I appreciate your time!
