May 25, 2017 The Call – #TrumpBudget — #BudgetFromHell Trump’s budget proposal provides a massive tax cut for the rich, a big increase in military funding and slashes safety net programs and federal agency spending. The budget contains a $2 trillion dollar error in that it assumes the tax cuts will pay for themselves via increased growth, but then double counts the supposed increased growth by assuming it will be much higher than estimated by the Congressional Budget Office. It also slashes a huge number of social safety net, agency, healthcare and other federal programs. These include drastic cuts to children’s healthcare (in addition to the cuts in Trumpcare) including children’s Medicaid and CHIP. The budget also slashes social security disability payments. The SNAP food stamp program is also cut dramatically. Despite a supposed policy of helping the unemployed transition to paid jobs, job training programs are also a victim of the budget. Student loan programs also fall under the axe. Work study programs for college students are yet another victim of the cuts. While the White House argues the budget does not cut Medicaid, analysts say that by converting Medicaid into insufficient block grants to the states, the budget will effectively cut federal Medicaid by $800 billion or more. Numerous other programs and agencies (especially the EPA) are deeply cut under the proposed budget. Your Action Call your MoC’s and ask that they not vote for any budget that includes significant cuts to one or more of the programs which is slated to be slashed. In choosing a program, it is most powerful if you choose one which could impact you, your family or friends. If not, choose one that is most meaningful to you. Talking Points
