Daily Call To Action: March 14th, 2017

March 14, 2017 The Call – Reject #Trumpcare Trumpcare was written by a small group of Republicans, unveiled last week and rammed through two House panels before the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (“CBO”) could “score” it to estimate how many would lose coverage, and the effect on premiums and the federal budget. The CBO report, issued Monday, estimated 14 million fewer people would be insured by next year and premiums over the next two years would increase significantly more than under the ACA. By 2026, 24 million fewer people would be insured. Although average premiums are estimated to be 10% lower than if the ACA is not repealed, premiums would be higher for older Americans and most insurance would cover less (higher co-pays and deductibles and coverage caps). Under Trumpcare, there would be approximately $336 billion in federal budget savings over the course of 10 years. This represents the difference between lower revenue because of tax cuts for insurance companies and wealthy Americans, and lower federal spending on Medicaid and premium support. Vox has presented this data in a set of useful charts. While the President’s administration has cast doubt on the credibility of the CBO, the head of the CBO was appointed by Republican Congressional leadership. Even prior to the release of the CBO score, there had been a storm of criticism, including the rejection of Trumpcare by the American Medical Association and AARP. Numerous Republicans have also sharply criticized the bill. The CBO report makes it even harder for Republicans to enact Trumpcare, which benefits the wealthy and harms a broad swath of Americans. The distinct possibility that this bill can be defeated presents an alluring opportunity to put a chink in the President’s armor by denying him the ability to make good on a central campaign promise. Your Action Call all three of your members of Congress and ask them to publicly oppose and vote against Trumpcare. Script “Hi. My name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP]. I’m calling to urge [Rep/Sen____] to vote against Trumpcare. As the CBO report shows, only the wealthy will benefit and millions of Americans will lose insurance or pay more for inferior insurance. I greatly appreciate your time.”
