Daily Call To Action: June 7th, 2017

June 7, 2017 The Call – #EmolumentsClause #Corruption #TrumpRussia Unlike previous presidents, President Trump flouts traditional ethics norms by refusing to divest (or even reveal) business interests, including foreign interests, that create a conflict. His arrangements are in clear violation of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which the Founders adopted to ensure that no American officials would be beholden to foreign powers. Now, it appears Trump is not even trying to abide by the inadequate process he put in place to avoid violating the Emoluments Clause. The latest example is a Wall Street Journal report this week that Trump’s DC hotel received $270,000 from a Saudi group lobbying to repeal the law that allowed 9/11 families to sue the Saudis. Last week, CNN reported that US Intelligence intercepted communications between Russian officials that suggested they had financial information that could be used to influence the Trump administration. Trump’s unwillingness to criticize Putin and his embrace of Putin-favored policies raise obvious questions of whether Trump’s financial connections with Russia are influencing US policy to the detriment of US national security. Trump has refused to release his tax returns, and instead offered up a cleverly worded but misleading letter from his lawyers, which actually says next to nothing about his Russian financial connections. More questions were raised about the Trump family’s financial connections to Russia by reports that Jared Kushner tried to set up a covert channel to Putin and then followed up by meeting with the head of a sanctioned Russian bank, who is former KGB and close to Putin. The bank said the meeting was for business purposes, which the White House has denied. Legislation (S.65/H.R.371) which would force disclosure and divestiture of conflicts has stalled in Congress. The appearance that financial entanglements with Russia are affecting US policy and national security is exactly the type of danger the Emoluments Clause was designed to prevent. Congress must demand transparency and divestiture. Your Action Call your members of Congress to urge them to demand financial transparency by the president as to all direct and indirect financial ties to Russia and other countries, as well as divestiture of conflicts. Talking Points

  • This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].

  • The president and his senior aides appear to many foreign conflicts and  hidden financial ties to Russia.

  • It is very suspicious that Trump never criticizes Putin and seems to be damaging NATO, a Putin goal.

  • Does the MoC support (S.65/H.R.371), which would demand transparency and divestiture of conflicts?

  • I want [Rep/Sen____] to demand disclosure of all ties Trump and his senior allies have to Russia and demand divestiture of all businesses that creates a conflict.
