June 5, 2017 The Call – #IndependentCommission (S.27/H.R.356) Tell your members of Congress to support an independent commission to investigate Russian interference into the US election and any collusion of the President’s campaign with Russia. Legislation to establish an independent of commission of outside experts is currently under consideration in both the House (H.R.356) and the Senate (S.27). There are new revelations about Trump and his allies’ contacts with Russia almost every day and the accumulating evidence is damning. Over the last week, there were new revelations about senior adviser Jared Kushner, infamous Brexiteer Nigel Farage, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and a Trump plan to unilaterally lift Russia sanctions. Former FBI director James Comey is scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday and his testimony is expected to highlight the issue of whether Trump attempted to obstruct the FBI investigation. While the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel was crucial to the integrity of the FBI investigation, it does not ensure an investigation free from political interference or produce the comprehensive report we need to prevent on-going interference by Russia. The most recent House Intel hearings showcased Republican efforts to discredit the evidence, as they (ineffectively) tried to discredit CIA Director John Brennan’s explosive testimony. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee tried to distract from the damning testimony of former acting AG Sally Yates and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper by focusing on leaks. Representative Adam Schiff explained, in a video posted to Twitter, why we still need an independent commission. While most Democrats (and some Republicans) are calling for a special committee, so far Republicans have blocked the legislation. Your Action Call your members of Congress to urge them to support (S.27/H.R.356), which would establish an independent commission on Russia’s role in the 2016 election. Talking Points
This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].
I want the MoC to support (S.27/H.R.356), which establishes an independent commission that would fully investigate and report on Russian interference in our election.
The special counsel appointed by DOJ was important, but it won’t produce a comprehensive report to combat future foreign attempts to interfere in our elections.
Where does the MoC currently stand on this issue?
