January 1, 2018 The Call – #DreamActNow #NoDreamNoDeal Trump’s original deal with Democrats to support DACA relief (without a wall) was greeted with enormous blow-back by his base. Trump quickly backtracked and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser with white nationalist sympathies, worked with hard-line GOP Senators to craft conditions for Dreamer legal status, including the wall, massive immigration cuts and highly punitive immigration enforcement measures. Democrats missed an opportunity in 2017 to demand that the status of the Dreamers be fairly resolved as a condition to authorizing government spending past year end; they must not miss the new January 19 deadline. Besides being heartless, failing to protect the Dreamers would be bad for the economy. Even the Koch-backed Cato Institute has concluded that there is a powerful economic case in favor of a clean Dream Act. While most of Trump’s base and some Republicans in Congress will oppose any relief, there is strong sentiment among others to protect the Dreamers. However, Trump has recently been siding with his hard-line base on the issue of DACA. Bipartisan talks on DACA are scheduled at the White House on Wednesday afternoon and we must make sure our members of Congress know that they must protect the Dreamers without holding them hostage to a useless border wall and punitive anti-immigration measures. Ending DACA and leaving the Dreamers subject to deportation would be a cruel betrayal of young people raised as Americans. Congress must pass the Dream Act now. Your Action Call your three members of Congress and urge them to support a clean Dream Act. Talking Points
This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].
I urge [Sen/Rep____] to support [S.1615/H.R.3440], the Dream Act, without conditions.
The Dreamers arrived in the US through no fault of their own and have been raised as Americans.
Breaking faith with the Dreamers or holding them hostage to funding for a useless wall or other costly border control measures would be cruel and un-American.
Deporting the Dreamers would not only be cruel, but would hurt the economy.
[If your MoC is a Democrat] Refuse to authorize any government spending past the January 19 deadline unless the status of the Dreamers is fairly resolved.
