Daily Call To Action: January 26th, 2017

January 26, 2017 The Call Stand up for civil rights by urging your senators to respond to the President’s Muslim exclusion order and executive order on punishing “Sanctuary Cities” by holding up Jeff Sessions’ confirmation. The ACLU is urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to hold another round of hearings on the nomination of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General. The vote is currently scheduled for early next week. Since Sessions’ previous hearing before the Committee, President Trump has issued a Muslim exclusion order and an executive order allowing the federal government to punish so-called Sanctuary states and cities.  These executive orders, which Sessions was reportedly very involved in crafting, raise major Constitutional issues. As the ACLU states, the Committee must “vigorously question the role of Senator Sessions in developing these new orders and his plans to implement and execute them” before voting on his nomination. Your Action Call your 2 senators and urge them to push the Senate Judiciary Committee to hold additional hearings on Jeff Sessions’ nomination to Attorney General in order to determine his role in developing the controversial new orders and any plans he has for implementing them. Script “Hi. My name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [STATE].  I’m calling to ask [Senator ____] to urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to hold another hearing on the nomination of Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. There are reports that Sessions played a key role in crafting the Muslim exclusion order and the order allowing the federal government to punish Sanctuary Cities. I’m very concerned these orders, which the Judiciary Committee did not get a chance to questions Sessions about, raise major Constitutional issues. The Committee needs to question Sessions on his role in crafting them and about how he would implement them. I’d appreciate if [Senator ____] would publicly call for additional hearings to determine the answers to these pressing questions about Senator Sessions before a vote occurs.”
