January 20, 2017 The Call In honor of the inauguration, we are doing things a bit differently today. Many of you, since November 8th, have hit the ground running: daily calls, joining groups, marching, self-educating, glutting on media, all in a pretty awe-inspiring attempt to quickly unify with the hope to stave off the worst damage of a Trump presidency. And, now, here we are. Day one. It seems important to hold onto two ideas today. (1). No one leader can ever define our entire country or lay proprietary claim on its greatness. (2). We are all proactive and needed members of this republic. The Loyal Opposition believes that being a real American is tied to the idea of a social contact centered on kindness and civility. It is now abundantly clear that there will be no presidential leadership over the next few years to heal our country’s divide and we are being called to become our own leaders. We intend in the days ahead to practicing kindness in whatever capacity we can. We will remember the principles of humanity as defined in the Declaration of Independence: that all of us are created equal, and we all do have the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Your Actions 1) Take a moment today to define what patriotism, being an American, means to you. Not in the terms of nationalist jingoism, but in the genuine sense of who we are and who we want to be as a nation. What ideals, goals, and beliefs are important for you to see this country either preserve or begin to enact moving forward? Is there a way, even in small capacities, that you can enact these ideals on a daily basis moving forward? Afterwards, send a tweet with the hashtag #RealAmerican to @MattAsherS and we’ll retweet as many as we can throughout the day. 2) Complete The Loyal Opposition’s Inauguration checklist. A) Unfollow @POTUS,@FLOTUS, @VP & @WhiteHouse on Twitter. UPDATE: @POTUS, @FLOTUS, @VP & @WhiteHouse have automatically been converted to @POTUS44, @FLOTUS44, @VP44 & @ObamaWhiteHouse. There is no need to unfollow. B) Change your picture across all social media platforms to a black square. C) Use the congressional lookup below to save your senators and representative’s number to your contacts. D) Tune your television to The Weather Channel, Spanish language programming or literally any channel not carrying the inauguration. E) Take a few moments to consider a plan for your health – both mental and physical. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We all need to take care of ourselves. F) Peruse our list of resources and allied sites. We hope you take some comfort knowing how many of us there are working for a better future.
