Daily Call To Action: February 17th, 2017

February 16, 2017 The Call – Demand Sessions Recusal in #FlynnGhazi Urge your members of Congress to publicly demand that Attorney General Jeff Sessions recuse himself from any investigation into Michael Flynn and his conversations with the Russian ambassador, including whether anyone else on the Trump team was aware of or approved those conversations. The Washington Post reported that Flynn denied to the FBI that he discussed sanctions in his calls with the ambassador. Despite Flynn’s apparent lie to the FBI, CNN reported that DOJ/FBI does not plan to indict Flynn on the premise that although Flynn initially denied he discussed sanctions, when pressed in the FBI interview, he said he could not remember for certain. Given the flimsy pretext for the FBI not pursuing the matter, there is significant concern that the decision was largely political and based on Attorney General Sessions’ long involvement with Flynn, Trump and the campaign. DOJ guidelines mandate that the AG recuse himself from an investigation or prosecution if he has a political relationship with any person involved in the conduct that is the subject of the investigation or who would be directly affected by the outcome. Your Action Call all three of your members of Congress and ask them to make a public statement demanding that Attorney General Sessions recuse himself from any investigation of Flynn, Trump or anyone else associated with the Trump campaign. Script “Hi. My name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in zip code [ZIP]. Can you tell me if [Rep/Sen____] has publicly asked that Attorney General Jeff Sessions recuse himself from any Russia-related investigations into General Michael Flynn, the President and anyone on the President’s campaign team?” [If Yes] “I’m really happy to hear that. I have significant concerns about Sessions’ ability to be independent given how politically close he is to the President. I urge [Rep/Sen____] to continue to speak out and to consider any actions that he/she can take to force the issue. Thank you very much for time.” [If No] “I’m a bit disappointed to hear that because DOJ guidelines require an Attorney General to recuse himself if he has a political relationship with the subject of an investigation and Sessions was deeply involved in the President’s campaign. I’m also very concerned by reports that General Flynn will not be prosecuted for lying to the FBI. The AG is in a position to make that decision and it makes it clear to me that Sessions is not independent and has made a political calculation, not one based on the law. I will be following [Rep/Sen’s____] statements and actions on this matter and I hope he/she will stand up for the rule of law. I greatly appreciate your time.”
