Daily Call To Action: December 1st, 2017

December 1, 2017 The Call – #TrumpTaxScam #GOPtaxscam The vote on the Senate tax bill is postponed until at least 11 am on Friday. One setback was a projection by the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), the official Congressional scorekeeper, that the tax plan would add more than $1 trillion to the deficit over 10 years. A second setback was a ruling by the Senate parliamentarian that a tax increase trigger that Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) and several other fiscal hawks proposed in the event projected revenues fell short, was not eligible for reconciliation (and couldn’t be passed with 50 votes). Republicans are scrambling for a fix and major portions of the bill are being rewritten overnight as Republicans try to meet the objections of various GOP Senators. However, it is expected that the bill will still include a provision that would repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, causing premiums for all to rise and 13 million fewer people to have health insurance within  a decade. The final bill is also expected to lift constraints on political activities by tax-exempt churches, allowing churches to become another source of political “dark money.” The final bill is also expected to hit colleges and universities hard. The huge deficits that the tax bill is projected to generate are expected to result in dramatic spending cuts to crucial programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The Senate vote will be very close, and with all Democrats likely to vote no, Republicans cannot afford to lose more than 2 votes. Your Action Call your Senators and urge them to oppose the GOP tax plan. Talking Points

  • This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].

  • I urge [Sen___] to oppose the Senate tax bill now being proposed.

  • The bill gives massive cuts to the wealthy, while millions of middle-class families and small businesses would have tax increases.

  • This legislation would add over $1 trillion to the deficit over 10 years, imperiling crucial programs such as Medicare.

  • The bill’s provision to repeal the ACA’s individual mandate will destroy the Affordable Care Act, raise premiums for everyone and cause more than 13 million people to lose insurance.

  • It is irresponsible to enact such sweeping legislation without full hearings, a bipartisan process and CBO score on the final bill.
