August 24, 2017 The Call: #TransTroops #TransRightsAreHumanRights In late July, Trump tweeted that transgender people would no longer be allowed to serve in the military after being encouraged to do so openly by President Obama in 2016. There was an immediate backlash, with many in Congress, including many Republicans, strongly supporting the right of transgender troops to serve. Although Trump claimed he was acting after consultation with the military, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said they were blindsided. While active duty military is limited in their ability to criticize the Commander in Chief, 56 retired general and admirals signed a letter criticizing the ban. Several lawsuits, including one by the ACLU, have been filed attacking the ban. Despite the broad opposition, the White House will reportedly issue rules preventing transgender people from joining the military, prevent medical treatments for current transgender military and setting up a mechanism to discharge current transgender troops. Numerous transgender troops have fought and served honorably for decades and now are faced with an uncertain future. Your Action Call your three members of Congress and ask them to denounce Trump’s ban on transgender Americans serving in the military and to fight its implementation. Talking Points
This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].
Transgender Americans have honorably served in the military for decades.
Most of the senior military command welcome all Americans willing and able to serve, including those who are transgender.
The costs of including transgender Americans in the military have been shown to be very small.
Stripping rights from existing troops and banning future troops is wrong, needlessly discriminatory and bad for America.
I urge [Sen/Rep_____] to denounce the ban on transgender Americans serving in the military and to fight its implementation.
