August 15, 2017 The Call –#DefendDACA #DefendDREAMers #DreamAct In 2012, President Obama issued an executive order (DACA) allowing undocumented migrants (Dreamers) brought to the US as children to obtain work permits and remain in the US without fear of deportation. Having grown up in America, Dreamers feel American, and are de facto as American as apple pie. Trump has made conflicting statements about Dreamers’ status, but has not rescinded Obama’s executive order. Hard line anti-immigrant groups, led by 10 Republican AG’s are threatening to sue the administration if it does not rescind the DACA order. The Trump administration has still not made a decision, but there is high anxiety that Trump will terminate DACA. Bipartisan legislation, the Dream Act, has been introduced in the Senate and the House, which would formalize protection for Dreamers so they were not subject to the whims of an executive order. Large majorities of American voters, including 73% of Trump voters, favor protecting Dreamers, and rescinding DACA would have a devastating economic effect. Tuesday August 15th is #DefendDaca Day.
